I don’t know a lot about trains except I like riding on them. So once I learned that Colorado has a railroad museum, I knew I had to go check it out and see what I could learn.
The museum is situated on 15 acres at the base of Table Mountain in Golden and features a small indoor museum, a model railroad and over 100 different types of locomotives and cars outside in their rail yard.
The Museum
Definitely spend some time on the main floor museum. It’ll give you a good history of the railroads here in Colorado, complete with photos, documents and other fun stuff.
Model Train
Don’t forget to head down to the basement to check out their model train. I’ve never seen a more complete and impressive layout in person before. There are so many little details to look at and it’s fun to watch it go around its track.
Locomotives & Cars in the Rail Yard
You’ll have fun exploring the grounds here because you’re free to go into many of the cars to see what they looked like. One of my favorites was the Post Office Car, though they have all types.
